FREE Ice Hockey

 

In our continued effort to bring ice hockey to the community, the Old York Road Raiders created our Developmental programs for youth players 12 and under. Ice Fees for the 2008 Summer Developmental Hockey with the Raiders this season will be waived! NO HOCKEY EXPERIENCE is necessary to participate in the Raiders Developmental programs, we will teach boys and girls how to play. Our programs are designed not to conflict with other sports. The Raiders are committed to developing both educated and skilled ice hockey players while having fun. We are offering teams for boys and girls at all age levels. The range of competition you have to choose from is full travel and developmental levels. Our teams will participate in the Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL).

 

FREE Ice Hockey Coaching Staff

The following is a list or our on ice coaching staff.
All coaches are USA Hockey certified and members in good standing.



Coach
Chalie Sgrillo -
Hockey Director

 

Hockey Director Chalie Sgrillo has over 20 years of experience instructing ice hockey and roller hockey players in the Philadelphia region. In the past, Coach Chalie has coached teams from all levels from Tier I, AAA to Tier II teams to Developmental teams to Instructional programs. While coaching Roller Hockey, he was the Head Coach of the Team USA 16U Inline National Team and went to the 2005 World Cup Championship. Currently Coach Chalie is coaching the FREE Ice Hockey and Developmental programs as well as the Complete Player clinics and assisting Raiders Youth Hockey Teams. Additionally, he held various hockey clinics at the Rink as well as serving as the Raiders’ ACE Coordinator.

Coach
Michael Ryan

Coach Michael Ryan grew up playing in the Boston area for the Hyde Park and Dedham Youth Hockey organizations. While playing he was coached by former Boston Bruins Head Coach Mike Sullivan. When his family relocated to the Philadelphia area, he played his final year in youth hockey with the Raiders.

Currently Coach Mike has assisted with the Mite and PeeWee levels. Additionally he has helped or been the lead instructor for the FREE Ice Hockey, Learn to Hockey Skate and Clinics and Camps held at the rink.


Players must be Under 12 to qualify for the
2008 Fall FREE Ice Hockey program.

NO HOCKEY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

ICE FEES ARE FREE!

Participants will be responsible for the following:
- AAU Membership*
- One (1) Raiders Jersey for the player
**
Socks are available for an extra $12 per pair.

All players will be placed on age appropriate teams.

***No Sessions will be held on Halloween Oct. 31st or Thanksgiving Nov. 28, 2008.

Participants are allowed to register for the FREE Ice Hockey program only once during the Spring/Summer Season,
this excludes participants with a birth year of 2001 and later.
(birth year of 2002 or later for Fall session)

Required Equipment

The Rink at Old York Road REQUIRES that all players have the following Ice Hockey equipment. If you have any questions about the equipment, please ask at front desk:

  • Shinguards
  • Elbow Pads
  • Certified Ice Hockey
    Helmet & Facemask
  • Mouthguard
  • Ice Hockey Skates
  • Loaner Equipment is available at the Rink to help the players get started!
    (Hockey Skate rentals are available at the Rink)

    Learn to Hockey Skate
    The Learn to Hockey Skate curriculum is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating. The focus is on proper skating techniques and will be taught with hockey skates. all participants must have an ice hockey certified hockey helmet and hockey gloves. Elements are taught without a stick or puck.

     

  • Learn to Hockey Skate 1 & 2
    Proper stance • Dip or squat • Snowplow stop • Backward skating • Skating forward using full strides • Backward hustle • Glide turns, both directions • Moving snowplow stops
  • Learn to Hockey Skate 3 & 4
    Hockey turns, R and L, with speed and out of turn • Forward slalom • Backward V-stop • Forward crossovers - clockwise and counterclockwise • Alternating backward C-cuts in a line (1/2 swizzle pumps) • Hockey stop
  • Wednesdays
    5:00-6:00 PM

    All boys and girls who want to Learn to Play Hockey, must have prior skating experience
    before they enroll in the Rink’s LTPH and FREE Ice Hockey programs.
